Art of the Intifada
A slide presentation of Palestinian Art
by Samia A Halaby, Artist, Author, and Activist

Samia A HalabySamia Halaby has traveled in Palestine extensively and interviewed 46 artists in preparation for a book on Palestinian art. Her analysis is art historical but the stories she tells about the artists and their experiences are compelling and emotional. They enlighten us on the life of the Palestinians through the poignant daily experiences of the artists and the realities they witness.

In her work Halaby is abstract: “My paintings are based on both 20th Century and Arabic abstraction. In my pictures I removed narration as subject matter and replaced it with the general principles of motion. The rhythm of contemporary cities and industry fascinate me as much as natural growth. Images as seen from one point of view are replaced with abstract rhythms. Perspective and shading are replaced by relative space and light.”

Halaby, born in Jerusalem, Palestine, received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University in 1963, and taught on the university level for 17 years, ten of which were at the Yale School of Art. She has had one-artist shows all over the world including Amman, Beirut, Damascus, Dubai, Granada, Strasbourg, Ramallah, Honolulu, New York, and several other cities in the US. Her work are in many museum collections internationally including the Guggenheim, The Institute Du Monde Arabe, and the Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Halaby is the subject of two monographs. As a member of the first ever web based art space, her work can be seen at www.art.net/samia.
