In mid-September, the Open Arms Hispanic Ministry in Orrville, will begin a small (under 10 students) remote tutoring program for Hispanic elementary school students in Orrville and a few other area schools. The program will be modeled on a successful pilot program Open Arms ran this summer. A tutor will meet online for an hour once a week with a student in 1st to 5th grade. Each tutor and student will have the same material packets and can work via Zoom or other mutually acceptable platforms. Open Arms will do the initial meetings and introductions.
Knowledge of Spanish is not required, but might be of some assistance. The focus of the tutoring sessions will be on assistance with homework and English-language skills, while strengthening confidence in online learning. Open Arms will assist the students and their families with access to the necessary technology. The area schools the students are in are planning a 5-day a week in-class model; however there is the possibility of remote instruction continuing to be used. Open Arms is excited about this program offering language and academic assistance to Hispanic students. For more information, please contact the Church office
