The #WayneCountyFairForAll booth will again provide a presence at this yearâ€™s fair. The Wooster/Orrville NAACP and Westminster Presbyterian Church stand in strong opposition to the sale of the Confederate flag and related merchandise at the event which runs Saturday, September 9th through Thursday the 14th.Â
Thank you to all supporters who have joined us in the struggle for racial justice in Wayne County â€“ we are making progress! In what appears to be an encouraging step towards a more tolerant and inclusive atmosphere at the Wayne County Fair this year, a reconciliatory meeting took place this week.
Wooster/Orrville NAACP and Westminster Presbyterian Church Response to Vendor Contract extended by the Wayne County Fair Board
It is our view that there has been a gross injustice committed in the handling of the Vendor Application for a #BlackLivesMatter booth at the Wayne County Fair scheduled to take place on September 10-15, 2016.
The Wayne County Fair's decision in January of this year to allow the sale and display of confederate flags and related merchandise reflects a lack of concern for African Americans and reflects prejudice, racism, and white supremacy, which the Confederate Flag represents.
As progressives it is sometimes very difficult to realize our own prejudices as we are not overtly racist and therefore think we are without bias. As a people who desire to be "Intentionally Inclusive" this unnoticed racism can be very harmful as we do not see how we participate in structures of systemic oppression, and therefore fail to create the "inclusive" community we desire.
As a community, it is important for us to ask the question why county fairs, including the Wayne County Fair, have become the â€ślast stop shopâ€ť for confederate flags and confederate flag memorabilia.
